On August 12, 2024, the "AI for Bioengineering Summer School" opened in Lecture Hall 300, Science Building, Minhang Campus, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This summer school attracted More than 30 universities(including the University of Chicago, the University of Manchester, Columbia University, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Southern California, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc.) and 27 companiesofMore than 100Interested in artificial intelligence and bioengineeringOutstanding young scholars, business representatives, graduate students, senior undergraduates, participated in this 3-day AI knowledge feast, and the number of offline and online live viewersNearly 10,000 people.

The summer school was hosted by the Shanghai National Center for Applied Mathematics (SJTU Branch) and the Institute of Natural Sciences of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and co-organized by the School of Mathematical Sciences of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the School of Physics and Astronomy of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Key Laboratory of Scientific and Engineering Computing of the Ministry of Education. Jin Shi, Dean of the Institute of Natural Sciences of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Director of the Shanghai National Center for Applied Mathematics (SJTU Branch), Yang Jianqun, Researcher of the Information Technology Department of Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and Ding Lei, Deputy Director of the Academic Development and Achievement Department of the Institute of Science and Technology Development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, attended and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was hosted by Hong Liang, Distinguished Professor of the Institute of Natural Sciences and the School of Physics and Astronomy.

Guests’ speeches at the opening ceremony

Jin Shi, Dean of the School of Natural Sciences of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Director of the Shanghai National Center for Applied Mathematics (Shanghai Jiao Tong University Branch), first welcomed the summer school participants from all over the country. He emphasized the transformative impact of artificial intelligence in the field of bioengineering, and especially mentioned the breakthroughs made by Professor Hong Liang's team in AI protein design. Jin Shi hopes that the summer school will promote interdisciplinary exchanges and cooperation, stimulate innovative thinking, and promote the application of AI in the field of bioengineering. He also hopes that the participants can apply what they have learned to scientific research practice and jointly promote the development of the field of AI engineering.

On behalf of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Yang Jianqun, a researcher at the Information Technology Department of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, congratulated the successful holding of the summer school and emphasized the support and expectations of the Shanghai Municipal Government for the development of artificial intelligence. She mentioned Shanghai's major breakthroughs and policy support in the field of artificial intelligence as a frontier of scientific and technological innovation, as well as the revolutionary role of artificial intelligence in bioengineering. Yang Jianqun hopes that this summer school will inspire the innovative spirit of young scholars, cultivate talents with an international perspective, and promote in-depth exchanges and cooperation with experts and scholars, so as to jointly promote the development of Shanghai in the field of artificial intelligence bioengineering.

Ding Lei, deputy director of the Academic Development and Achievements Department of the Institute of Science and Technology Development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered a speech. She expressed a warm welcome and sincere gratitude to the experts and trainees attending the meeting. She believes that artificial intelligence is a leader in global scientific and technological innovation, and universities play an important role in promoting basic theory and industrial development. Ding Lei mentioned that Shanghai Jiao Tong University is using its comprehensive advantages in the field of artificial intelligence to actively serve national strategies and Shanghai's industrial development, and is committed to achieving new breakthroughs in the field of AI. She said that AI for Bioengineering is one of the core of the school's strategic planning, and it will promote the deep integration of scientific research and artificial intelligence by establishing an interdisciplinary research center and gathering top talents.
