MIT Media Lab is well-known for its innovation in the field of academic research. Last year at Halloween, the MIT Media Lab Scalable Collaboration Group demonstrated an algorithm that can write horror novels. It is named after the novelist Mary Shelley, the author of the famous horror novel "Frankenstein".

In April this year, the team created an extremely pessimistic AI named Norman, which was used to detect the impact of learning negative texts on AI. It can be said that Norman is definitely the most pessimistic AI in history.

Feeding Norman horror movies is scary

This AI is called Norman, and the name comes from the perverted murderer Norman Bates in the famous horror film "Psycho" directed by Hitchcock in 1960. MIT also announced that the psychopath Norman they developed is the world's first AI with a perverted mentality, and is extremely pessimistic.

Engineers at MITLab conducted "cruel" training on Norman, letting it immerse itself in extremely dark content such as death, anxiety, and corpses on Reddit every day. This is also the only data source that Norman can access.

Psychological test results: This AI is abnormal

So, how to detect Norman's mental state?

After a period of deep learning training, Norman can output text to describe a picture.

Therefore, Norman's psychological state can be examined using the Rorschach Inkblots test, which was created by Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach and detects personality by observing people's descriptions of 10 inkblot pictures.

During the experiment, ordinary AI was used as a control experiment. The same picture was fed to them. The output results of ordinary AI and Norman were compared. It was found that for the same picture, Norman always saw something creepy.

Building the most depressing AI: Data is more important than algorithms

Influenced by the training data, in Norman's eyes, almost everything is related to death and destruction. He is very pessimistic about the world as a whole and has completely imprinted the training data on the way he understands the world and his behavior.

There is a real case worth mentioning.

Last May, a report claimed that the AI used by US courts for risk assessment was biased against black people, believing that the recidivism rate of black criminals was twice that of white people. The reason was that the manually input data was biased against black people.

It can be seen that the impact of data on AI is much more profound than that of algorithms. Moreover, compared with humans, AI is more likely to amplify bias, while humans can constantly correct it through cognition.

These AI scientists are really idle.

MIT Media Lab was founded in 1980 and consists of more than 20 sub-groups. Norman was born in the "Scalable Collaboration" group, which consists of the three people shown below. In addition to "Norman, the saddest AI" and "Shelle, the best at telling horror stories",y", and they have also created several other weird AIs together.

On Halloween two years ago, they released an AI program called Nightmare Machine, which can turn an ordinary photo into a distorted, dark and scary one. They also concluded that AI can not only detect, but also induce extreme emotions (such as fear) in humans.

I believe they will release a new work with a higher horror index this Halloween.

Other Weird AI Applications

NO.3 AI Grilled Chicken Wings

Rokid, a well-known domestic smart device company, released a video not long ago.

The video shows a robot device starting to help its owner grill chicken wings under voice commands.

No.2 AI writes horror novels

Back to Shelley, scientists at MITLab also trained AI through stories collected on a subreddit dedicated to sharing original weird stories.

Shelley has now been able to get inspired by a short paragraph and start writing the creepy stories that emanate from her creative mind:

I could feel something watching me and I could see this dark shadow standing there with a torrent of hatred in its face. I was beyond scared so I didn't take my eyes off this thing and turned back towards the mirror to see what was behind me!

NO.1 Inflatable Doll AI Upgrade Robot

The sex robot developed and designed by RealDoll has been launched. Note that this is the world's first sex robot, no longer an ordinary inflatable doll. The Harmony AI system they are currently developing can add a new level to the relationship between RealDoll dolls and people, and the chat is not limited to sex topics.

At the same time, the sex robot is highly realistic, with a built-in flexible skeleton, and its production process takes more than 80 hours to create a sex doll.

Moreover, the robot's private parts can be customized, and the face can be changed at will according to the user's interests. Currently, the product has a variety of female and male body shapes to choose from, which can be matched with 18 personalities provided by Harmony AI, such as shy, sexy, and little woman, and men can also have domineering presidents, little milk dogs, warm men, etc. There is always the one you like.
