The Associated Press and Equilar recently counted the annual salaries of CEOs of most companies in the S&P 500, and sorted and analyzed them. Among them, AMD's Lisa Su topped the list with $58.5 million, becoming the first woman to top the list since the list was created.

The Associated Press and salary research firm Equilar recently released the annual salary rankings of CEOs of S&P 500 companies. AMD CEO Lisa Su topped the 2019 S&P 500 CEO annual salary list.

Notes:Standard & Poor's (S&P)It is a recognized standard in the financial investment community.S&P 500 All companies covered are listed on major US exchanges, such as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, and have high market capitalization and good liquidity.

Most of the S&P 500 companies are high-tech, innovative companies in emerging industries such as information technology, biomedicine, and Internet commerce, and their industrial structure is more mature and complete.

The survey shows that Su Zifeng's total compensation in 2019 was US$58.5 million (RMB 416 million). This also makes her the first female CEO to top the list since the survey was launched in 2011.

This is about $12.7 million higher than the $45.8 million annual salary of Zaslav, the second-place CEO of Discovery Inc.

After 6 years in office, the company's market value increased 26 times

Although AMD, founded in 1969, is considered an old semiconductor manufacturer, its development in recent years had been suppressed by companies such as Intel and NVIDIA before Su Zifeng joined.

Su Zifeng was born in 1969 and immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of three.

Su Zifeng, who graduated with a Ph.D. from MIT at the age of 25, worked at IBM for thirteen years starting in 1995, and was promoted to vice president of IBM Semiconductor Research and Development Center.

He later served as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of semiconductor company Freescale, and joined AMD in 2012 as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

In 2014, he officially became the CEO of AMD, and AMD's stock price has been soaring since then.Six years have passed, and AMD's stock price has soared from US$2.8 when she first took office to more than US$50 now.

In 2019 alone, the stock price maintained a high growth rate of 156%. No wonder Su Zifeng received unanimous recognition from the board of directors and was awarded an unprecedented stock reward.

How is CEO compensation calculated?

To calculate CEO compensation, Equilar adds together base salary, bonuses, allowances, stock awards, option awards, deferred compensation and other compensation components, including various benefits.

But to ensure fairness, Equilar first selected the S&P 500 companies.329 CEOs were selected, and those who had served as CEO for less than two years were excluded. To reduce the impact of signing bonuses on compensation.

Among those eliminated were Alphabet's (Google's parent company) Sundar Pichai and Intel CEO Robert Swan.

In fact, Pichai's total compensation last year was as high as 281 million US dollars (most of which were stock rewards), but it was still much higher than Su Zifeng.

In addition, among the 329 CEOs, 309 are male and 20 are female.

There are 20 female CEOs on the list, one more than last year, with a median annual salary of $13.9 million. The median annual salary of the 309 male CEOs on the list is $12.3 million.

The median pay of CEOs surveyed increased by 4.1% from 2018, while the average employee's pay increased by 3.2%, according to data analyzed by Equilar for the Associated Press. The average employee at most S&P 500 companies would probably have to spend two lifetimes to earn the CEO's annual salary, or 169 years.
