Global Earthquake Events – M4.5+ (1900-Present) is a global earthquake event dataset designed for seismic activity analysis and geospatial research. It aims to help researchers analyze the frequency, distribution, and magnitude changes of long-term seismic activity and is widely used in research areas such as earthquake disaster assessment, urban planning, geological research, and disaster early warning. This dataset contains 230,608 earthquake records, covering global earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above from 1900 to 2026.

Data fields:

  • usgs_id: Unique ID for USGS earthquake events
  • date: Date of earthquake (UTC)
  • year / month: Year and month of the event
  • lat / lon: Latitude and longitude of the epicenter
  • depth_km: focal depth (km)
  • Magnitude: Earthquake magnitude (≥ 4.5)
  • mag_type: Magnitude type (mw, ms, mb, ml, etc.)
  • magnitude_class: magnitude classification label
  • location_desc: Geographic location description
  • review_status: Review status (reviewed / automatic)
  • n_stations: The number of seismic stations involved in the calculation.
  • azimuthal_gap: Station azimuthal gap
  • min_station_dist: Distance from the nearest station
  • RMS: Travel Time Residual (RMS) value

Earthquake Magnitude Classification:

  • Great (M8+): Level 8.0 and above
  • Major (M7–7.9): Level 7.0–7.9
  • Strong (M6–6.9): 6.0–6.9 grade
  • Moderate (M5–5.9): Level 5.0–5.9
  • Light (M4.5–4.9): 4.5–4.9 level
