Flipper Devices Launches Open-Source Linux Platform Flipper One

The Flipper Devices team has officially announced Flipper One, a new open-source hardware project designed as a fully expandable Linux platform. Distinct from the popular Flipper Zero, Flipper One targets Layer 1 networking tasks involving IP connectivity, data transfer, and high-performance computing, whereas Flipper Zero handles Layer 0 protocols like NFC and RFID. The project is currently in a public development phase, seeking community collaboration to overcome significant technical and financial hurdles. Flipper One is built around the Rockchip RK3576 System on a Chip and runs a fully upstream Linux kernel without vendor-specific patches or boot blobs, in partnership with the Collabora team. The device features five independent network interfaces, including dual Gigabit Ethernet, 5 Gbps USB Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 6E, with support for adding 5G or satellite modules via M.2 expansion. This hardware architecture allows users to transform the device into a router, VPN gateway, or network analyzer. To facilitate this flexibility, the team has open-sourced enclosure designs and 3D models, encouraging the creation of custom expansion modules. The system utilizes a dual-processor architecture. A low-power microcontroller manages the display, buttons, and power subsystem, allowing the device to remain functional even when the main Linux CPU is off. The team aims to upstream drivers for this interconnect directly into the mainline kernel. Software development is supported by Flipper OS, a profile-based operating system layer that enables users to snapshot, clone, and revert configurations easily. Additionally, the project introduces FlipCTL, a lightweight user interface framework designed for small screens, allowing embedded Linux utilities to be navigated via a D-pad and buttons without heavy desktop environments. Future features include on-device AI capabilities through a local LLM and the NPU for offline configuration assistance, though kernel support for the NPU is still pending. The device also supports a Survival Desktop mode via a full-size HDMI port, enabling it to function as a thin client for TVs or monitors. The team is actively testing a MediaTek Wi-Fi chipset and seeking partners to integrate Non-Terrestrial Network satellite modems. Recognizing the project's complexity, the team has launched a Developer Portal to share internal task trackers, architectural debates, and unfinished documentation. They are hiring a Community Manager and inviting engineers, designers, and enthusiasts to contribute to sub-projects ranging from hardware design to kernel development. The founders describe Flipper One as a deeply personal decade-long endeavor to create a truly open, uncompromised multi-tool for the modern internet age.
