Freeform Raises $67M to Scale AI-Powered Laser Metal 3D Printing for Mass Manufacturing
Freeform, a startup pioneering a new approach to metal 3D printing, has raised $67 million in a Series B round to accelerate the scaling of its manufacturing platform. The funding round was led by Apandion, AE Ventures, Founders Fund, Linse Capital, Nvidia’s NVentures, Threshold Ventures, and Two Sigma Ventures. While the company declined to disclose its post-financing valuation, Pitchbook estimates it at $179 million. CEO and co-founder Erik Palitsch said the capital will be used to upgrade Freeform’s current GoldenEye system—a high-precision 3D printer that uses 18 lasers to fuse metal powders into complex components—into a next-generation platform called Skyfall. The new system will scale to hundreds of lasers, enabling the daily production of thousands of kilograms of metal parts. This leap is the realization of a vision Palitsch and co-founder/president Thomas Ronacher first developed in 2018 while working on rocket engines at SpaceX. There, they identified major shortcomings in existing industrial metal printers: high cost, mechanical fragility, and poor scalability for mass production. Freeform’s solution is built from the ground up with software-driven control systems and real-time data integration. Palitsch described the platform as “AI native,” highlighting a strategic partnership with Nvidia that gives the company access to cutting-edge GPUs. “I think we’re the only quote-unquote manufacturing company out there that has H200 clusters in a data center on site,” Palitsch told TechCrunch. “What are they doing? We’re running real-time physics-based simulations and learning all the different aspects of the end-to-end manufacturing workflow.” Sensors embedded throughout the system, combined with data from these simulations, generate vast amounts of information about the metal-printing process. This data enables rapid iteration and optimization of both quality and output. “We have more meaningful data on the physics of the metal-printing process than any company in the world,” said Cameron Kay, head of talent. Although Palitsch did not disclose specific customers, he confirmed that Freeform is already delivering hundreds of mission-critical components to clients. With growing demand, the company plans to hire up to 100 new employees and expand its facilities to fulfill its growing contract backlog. The rise of manufacturing-as-a-service has drawn increasing venture interest, as investors bet on the future of physical product development—especially in robotics, electric vehicles, and clean energy systems. Companies like Hadrian, which recently achieved a $1.6 billion valuation, and others such as VulcanForms and Divergent are also building advanced metal-printing platforms, signaling a broader shift toward intelligent, scalable manufacturing. Freeform’s AI-powered approach positions it at the forefront of this transformation.
