Google's Gemini AI rolls out to millions of vehicles

Google announced on Thursday that it is replacing its traditional Google Assistant with the more advanced Gemini AI assistant across millions of vehicles equipped with Google built-in. This strategic upgrade marks a significant shift toward enabling deeper, conversational artificial intelligence within the driving experience. While General Motors recently confirmed that Gemini will integrate into approximately four million vehicles from the 2022 model year onwards, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC, Google's broader announcement indicates that support extends beyond GM to likely include other automakers. The rollout initially targets the U.S. market with English language support, with plans to expand to additional regions and languages in the coming months. Unlike typical software updates that require new hardware, Gemini will be available to compatible existing vehicles through software updates, ensuring that cars with Google built-in launched as early as 2020 can benefit from the new system. The primary goal is to facilitate a more natural interaction style for drivers. Instead of rigid, command-based instructions, users will be able to speak freely to complete complex tasks. For example, a driver can request a highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating along their route. Gemini will utilize Google Maps data to provide suggestions and handle follow-up queries regarding parking availability, menu options, or specific dietary preferences. Beyond navigation and restaurant searches, the assistant can manage various vehicle functions, such as adjusting the heating, providing directions, or recommending music. It is also designed to handle communications by summarizing incoming messages and enabling hands-free responses. A key feature is Gemini Live, currently in beta testing, which supports open-ended, real-time conversations. Users can activate this mode by tapping an interface button or saying, Hey Google, let's talk, allowing for brainstorming, learning, or general discussion while on the road. Access to the new system is streamlined for users signed into their Google accounts within compatible vehicles, who will receive prompts to upgrade. Once enabled, Gemini can be controlled via voice commands, the on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls. Google has indicated that future updates aim to deepen integration with core services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home. This widespread deployment of Gemini positions Google to redefine in-car connectivity by combining the versatility of its large language models with the safety and convenience features required for modern transportation.
