Mistral AI Raises $830 Million to Bolster European Compute Capacity by Building Data Center Near Paris
French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI is accelerating its infrastructure deployment across Europe. According to reports by Reuters and CNBC, the firm has raised $830 million through debt financing and plans to construct an entirely new data center near Paris, which will primarily rely on NVIDIA chips for computing power. In fact, Mistral disclosed its plan to build a data center as early as last year. CEO Arthur Mensch stated in February 2025 that the company would explore various funding methods to advance project implementation. Under current planning, this facility located in Bruyères-le-Châtel, France, is expected to be completed and commence operations in Q2 2026. However, as of now, Mistral has yet to issue any formal response regarding these financing developments. Beyond projects within France, Mistral is simultaneously advancing AI infrastructure construction at multiple locations across Europe. Just last month, the company announced a €1.4 billion investment in Sweden to develop an AI infrastructure network including data centers. Overall, Mistral aims to deploy a total of 200 megawatts of computing capacity throughout Europe before 2027. Speaking to CNBC, Arthur Mensch emphasized that continuously expanding local European compute infrastructure is critical—not only for empowering customers but also for safeguarding Europe's innovation capabilities and technological sovereignty in the field of artificial intelligence. He stressed that amid growing demand from governments, enterprises, and research institutions for customized AI environments, the company will further increase investments to reduce reliance on third-party cloud services. On the financing front, Mistral continues to maintain strong momentum. Data from Crunchbase indicates that the company’s cumulative fundraising exceeds €2.8 billion (approximately $3.1 billion), backed by prominent investors such as General Catalyst, ASML, a16z, Lightspeed, and DST Global. Against intensifying global competition in AI infrastructure, Mistral seeks to secure a foothold in the European market through substantial asset-heavy investments.
