Situational Awareness Hedge Fund Invests $400M in Chip Startup Source Foundry

Embattled artificial intelligence-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness has committed an additional $400 million to chip manufacturing startup Source Foundry, elevating its total stake to $500 million. The investment underscores the firm's continued confidence in foundational hardware infrastructure despite recent market headwinds. Source Foundry, established by Stanford University researchers, is developing advanced technologies to accelerate and reduce the cost of semiconductor fabrication. The funding commitment arrives amid significant turbulence for Situational Awareness. Founded in 2024 by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, the fund initially posted strong early returns before encountering substantial losses driven by a broader selloff in artificial intelligence infrastructure equities. To stabilize operations, the fund liquidated the majority of its public holdings to Citadel Advisors in late July, retaining only its position in Anthropic. Consequently, assets under management contracted from approximately $20 billion to $10 billion. Despite the portfolio contraction, Aschenbrenner's strategic pivot toward private deep-tech assets signals a calculated long-term approach to the semiconductor supply chain. The latest capital injection into Source Foundry aligns with growing institutional demand for domestic chip production capabilities and next-generation manufacturing efficiency. Industry observers note that the move reinforces the growing intersection of speculative hedge fund capital and critical hardware development, as financial entities increasingly back ventures addressing physical bottlenecks in artificial intelligence scaling.
