On Global Accessibility Awareness Day, the Black Gold School Division in Alberta, Canada, highlighted how the adoption of ChromeOS Face Control and Google's Gemini AI has empowered students with disabilities to gain independence. The district serves 14,000 students across 32 schools from pre-K to grade 12 and sought solutions that go beyond improving learning to truly transforming the student experience. Darren Maltais, the technology integration facilitator, described a major shift for Liam Alphonse Dansereau, a seventh-grader with mobility differences. Previously, Liam relied on physical switch systems to operate his computer, a process that was logistically difficult and time-consuming. He often had to disconnect devices from his wheelchair to connect his laptop, and then use a head switch repeatedly to perform basic tasks like clicking links. Furthermore, every word he wanted to say required a scribe, and numbers had to be written down by others, severely limiting his autonomy. The district introduced Face Control, an accessibility feature built directly into every Chromebook. By utilizing the device's camera, this technology allows users to navigate, scroll, and click simply by moving their head. For Liam, this meant he could open assignments in Google Classroom and activate voice typing without assistance. The tool replaced the cumbersome switch setup, allowing him to complete his work independently and reclaim control over his daily school activities. To further streamline his experience, Maltais leveraged Gemini for Education, an AI tool designed for teaching and learning. Recognizing that Liam still faced challenges on educational sites like Khan Academy, Maltais used Gemini to generate code for a custom browser extension. This new extension scans websites for questions and highlights them, allowing Liam to access content with a single click rather than scrolling through lengthy pages. This combination of hardware accessibility and AI-driven customization represents a significant step forward for inclusive education in the district. By replacing physical barriers with intuitive digital solutions, the schools have removed the logistical hurdles that once hindered students with physical disabilities. The initiative demonstrates how integrating standard accessibility features with advanced AI coding tools can create a more equitable learning environment, ensuring that technology serves as a bridge to freedom rather than a hurdle to overcome.
