Google updates Workspace to add AI assistant

At Google Cloud Next, Google announced significant updates to its Workspace productivity suite, centering on an artificial intelligence system dubbed Workspace Intelligence. The rollout aims to automate routine office tasks and reduce manual workload for professionals. These enhancements integrate advanced AI capabilities across Gmail, Calendar, Chat, and Drive applications, including Docs, Slides, and Sheets. Workspace Intelligence acts as a digital assistant by analyzing a user's existing data to provide context-aware support. Administrators retain full control over data privacy, allowing them to specify which data sources the AI can access. Users can also disable access to specific sources at any time, though broader data access improves the system's ability to assist in those areas. A major focus of the update is Google Sheets, where Gemini now assists in both creating and populating spreadsheets. Users can generate complex sheets by prompting the AI to handle formatting and data retrieval. Additionally, Gemini automates data entry, inferring inputs to fill cells automatically. Google claims this approach is nine times faster than manual entry. The system also includes features to convert unstructured data into organized tables, streamlining data management. In Google Docs, new AI writing tools enable users to generate, write, and refine documents using Gemini. Powered by Workspace Intelligence, the system leverages data from Drive, Chat, Gmail archives, and the internet to assist with editorial tasks. Users can prompt Gemini to match their writing style, ensuring the generated content aligns with their personal voice. These developments reflect the broader tech industry's race to integrate efficient, convenient AI tools into enterprise environments. While Google benefits from the deep integration of its office products in global workplaces, it faces stiff competition from Microsoft, Apple, and numerous startups targeting the same market. The updates are designed to make average workers significantly more efficient by reducing the time spent on repetitive administrative duties.
