Anthropic pays SpaceX $1.25B monthly

SpaceX has secured a groundbreaking agreement with AI developer Anthropic to provide computing resources at a monthly cost of $1.25 billion. The deal, confirmed by Anthropic and detailed in SpaceX's recent S-1 filing for an initial public offering, is scheduled to run through May 2029. This arrangement marks a significant shift for the aerospace company, which will supply capacity from its Colossus data center in Tennessee and its upcoming Colossus 2 facility to support Anthropic's growing customer base. Under the terms of the contract, Anthropic will utilize the infrastructure primarily for inference tasks, which involve generating outputs from AI models. The agreement offers a discounted rate for the months of May and June and includes a clause allowing either party to terminate the partnership with 90 days' notice. If the deal proceeds for its full duration, SpaceX is projected to generate over $40 billion in revenue from Anthropic alone. This arrangement highlights SpaceX's strategic pivot toward monetizing its massive investments in artificial intelligence hardware. The financial stakes for SpaceX are substantial. The company reported a fourfold increase in AI-related operational losses to over $6 billion last year, driven by skyrocketing costs for cloud services and GPU depreciation. In the first quarter of this year alone, these losses more than doubled to nearly $2.5 billion. To address these soaring expenses and future needs, SpaceX plans significant capital expenditure on manufacturing its own graphics processing units, a move that would position it as a direct competitor to market leader Nvidia. Beyond its partnership with Anthropic, SpaceX maintains a complex relationship with other tech giants. The company currently utilizes Google Cloud through its Starlink subsidiary, a partnership that began in 2021 with the installation of ground stations at Google data centers. Paradoxically, SpaceX has also become a competitor to Google Cloud by leasing hundreds of megawatts of compute power to Anthropic. Additionally, SpaceX is exploring ambitious plans to establish data centers in space, with reports indicating that Google is currently in discussions to assist with these orbital infrastructure projects. The S-1 filing identifies AI infrastructure as a major growth market for SpaceX, estimating the sector's potential value at $2.4 trillion based on current GPU rental rates and demand. This structure allows SpaceX to monetize unused compute capacity while retaining the flexibility to reallocate resources for internal initiatives when necessary. As the company moves toward an IPO, the Anthropic deal underscores its transition from a pure aerospace enterprise to a key player in the global AI infrastructure landscape. Analysts view this agreement as a critical step in validating the commercial viability of SpaceX's cloud computing ambitions in an increasingly competitive market.
