Swiss AI Initiative Releases Apertus, a Fully Open Foundation Model

The Swiss AI Initiative, a collaborative venture between EPFL, ETH Zurich, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), has advanced its sovereign artificial intelligence strategy with the comprehensive rollout of Apertus. Developed in partnership with Swisscom, Apertus is a fully open foundation model engineered for transparency, regulatory compliance, and high-performance deployment. The initiative prioritizes open science by publicly releasing training datasets, source code, model weights, methodology documentation, and alignment principles, ensuring complete reproducibility for the global research community. Architecturally, Apertus is optimized for 8 billion and 70 billion parameter scales, delivering performance metrics that competitively match leading open-source models. It supports over one thousand languages natively, establishing a versatile multilingual foundation. A defining technical feature is its built-in compliance with the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act. The framework automatically processes opt-out requests, strips personally identifiable information, and implements memorization safeguards, enabling enterprises to deploy the model at scale without regulatory friction. Recent milestones demonstrate rapid model maturation and practical adoption. In March, a specialized regional variant, Apertus for Ticino, was fine-tuned to power domestic AI translation infrastructure. By April, the development team secured acceptance of their technical methodology paper at the ACL 2026 conference, a premier venue for natural language processing research. Most recently, in mid-June, the initiative released Apertus Mini, a suite of sixteen distilled and quantized models designed to demonstrate efficient deployment techniques and reduce computational requirements for developers. The project operates with comprehensive documentation and active community oversight, reinforced by a dedicated newsletter for ongoing technical updates. By combining sovereign computational resources, strict EU regulatory alignment, and full academic transparency, the Swiss AI Initiative has positioned Apertus as a production-ready foundation model. The continuous release cycle and recognized research contributions signal a sustained commitment to advancing open, high-capacity artificial intelligence within European and global technological ecosystems.
