Google open to ads in Gemini

Google has indicated it is open to introducing advertisements into its standalone Gemini AI application, although the company is currently concentrating its efforts on ad integration within its AI Mode feature in Google Search. Philipp Schindler, Google's Chief Business Officer, made these remarks during a recent earnings call, suggesting that successful ad formats developed for AI Mode could eventually be adapted for the dedicated Gemini app. While the standalone Gemini experience remains free of ads today, Google acknowledges that advertising could play a significant role in the product's future growth and scalability if implemented effectively. In response, Anthropic, the maker of the Claude AI model, recently mocked OpenAI's decision in a Super Bowl commercial, reaffirming that it has no plans to include ads in its product. Unlike these rivals, Google benefits from a massive existing advertising ecosystem across its Search and YouTube platforms, meaning there is no immediate financial pressure to monetize the Gemini app through ads. Instead of relying on advertisements, Google is currently prioritizing premium subscription bundles to generate revenue from Gemini. These paid tiers include advanced AI features along with additional perks such as Fitbit Premium and extra photo storage capacity. The company reported on Wednesday that its overall subscription business has reached 350 million paying subscribers. Google's approach suggests a preference for delivering a high-quality, ad-free user experience in the standalone app while exploring monetization opportunities in its conversational search interface first. The company remains focused on creating a great user experience while keeping the door open for advertising as a long-term growth tool, provided it aligns with user expectations and maintains service quality. This cautious, phased strategy allows Google to gather data on ad performance in AI Mode before deciding on a broader rollout across its generative AI portfolio.
