Google Home App Gets Major Update with Gemini Integration and Redesigned Interface

Google is rolling out a major update to its Google Home app, integrating the new Gemini AI assistant and introducing a refreshed user interface. Following the company’s announcement that Gemini will be brought to the Google Home smart home platform, Android Authority uncovered evidence of the changes in the upcoming v3.41.50.3 version of the app through code analysis. While the overall look of the app remains largely familiar, the redesign brings notable usability improvements and positions Gemini as a central feature. A new “Ask Home” search bar now appears at the top of the app, allowing users to control their smart devices by typing or speaking commands. The feature also enables users to search through their video and home activity history to retrieve detailed descriptions of past events, such as what was captured on a security camera or when a door was last opened. When users tap the “Ask Home” bar, they’re taken to a dedicated conversation screen that functions like a chat interface with Gemini, making it easier to interact with the AI assistant directly from the app. Other changes include renaming the Favorites tab to “Home,” streamlining the navigation experience. The Devices and Settings tab has been removed from the bottom navigation bar, leaving only three icons. Device management is now accessible via a grid icon within the Home tab. The updated Home page also features new customizable tiles, including options to display outdoor air quality and temperature—suggesting potential upcoming hardware from Nest, which is expected to launch next month. The addition of new icons for video and a thermometer further supports this speculation. The changes signal Google’s effort to make the Home app more intuitive and AI-driven, aligning with its broader strategy to embed Gemini into everyday user experiences. Many of these features have previously been tested in Google’s Public Preview program, and users are hopeful that this major refresh will finally bring those tools to all users.
