Meta Launches AI-Optimized Kansas City Data Center with $1B Investment, LEED Gold Certification, and Community Commitment

Meta’s Kansas City Data Center in Missouri is now fully operational and actively serving user traffic. Since its announcement in 2022, the facility has become a key part of Meta’s global infrastructure, enabling the delivery of its platforms and services to billions of people worldwide. Brad Davis, Meta’s Data Center Community and Economic Development Director, highlighted the city’s strengths in selecting the site, including reliable infrastructure, a strong electrical grid, access to skilled labor, and strong community partnerships. He expressed pride in being a long-term contributor to the Kansas City region and emphasized Meta’s ongoing commitment to supporting local growth. The construction of the Kansas City Data Center created an average of 1,500 skilled trade jobs at its peak, with over 100 permanent operational roles expected once fully active. Since 2011, Meta’s U.S. data center projects have supported more than 30,000 construction jobs and currently sustain over 5,100 operational positions across the country. The Kansas City facility represents an investment exceeding $1 billion in Missouri, with most construction materials sourced domestically. Meta has also invested in local communities, directing over $1 million to schools and nonprofit organizations in Clay County, Platte County, and Kansas City, Missouri. The company runs Community Accelerator events to help local small businesses develop digital skills and leverage AI tools like Meta AI to grow. Since fall 2024, the Data Center Community Action Grants have provided funding to initiatives that use technology to improve public services and advance STEAM education. The Kansas City Data Center is LEED Gold certified, reflecting its high standards in energy efficiency, water conservation, responsible supply chains, and recycling. It runs entirely on 100% clean and renewable energy, with a cooling system that uses significantly less water than typical industry methods. By capturing and reusing stormwater from on-site retention ponds, the project saved over one million gallons of potable water during construction. Looking ahead, Meta is preparing to launch its next generation of AI-optimized data centers, with the first expected to come online in 2026. These facilities will feature custom hardware, enhanced performance, and greater flexibility, all powered by AI-driven efficiency systems. Meta continues to work with local utilities and energy providers to upgrade infrastructure and expand renewable energy capacity. The company remains one of the world’s largest corporate buyers of clean energy, with over 15 gigawatts of renewable energy purchased across six countries. Meta remains committed to supporting local economies by hiring locally, sourcing materials regionally when possible, and continuing to fund community projects that promote technology access, education, and innovation.
