Four Mathematicians Win Fields Medal, Including Third Woman
The 2026 Fields Medal was announced recently at the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Philadelphia, awarded respectively to four young scholars under the age of 40 from China, the United States, and Canada: Deng Yu and Hong Wang, both holding Chinese citizenship, American John Pardon, and Canadian mathematician Jacob Zimerman. The award is presented every four years to recognize outstanding contributions involving breakthrough advances in mathematics. Among them, Hong Wang, currently teaching at New York University and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in France, stood out by solving the Kakayanagi conjecture that has existed for over a century, becoming the third female recipient in history; Professor Deng Yu’s win further confirms the significant rise of the Chinese mathematical community in recent years. This year's awards ceremony coincides with a critical juncture where the field of mathematics faces profound transformation driven by artificial intelligence technologies. Recently, several AI models have demonstrated the ability to generate proofs for advanced mathematics topics, drawing widespread attention from academia. In June, multiple scholars jointly released the Leiden Declaration, which explicitly pointed out that current automated tools tend to produce reasoning that appears plausible but lacks reliability, calling for the establishment of strict verification frameworks and ethical boundaries. Against this backdrop, Zimmermann announced he would join OpenAI’s safety department, acknowledging frankly that traditional career ecosystems in mathematics will undergo fundamental reshaping as technology evolves. The conferral of these Fields Medals serves not only as the highest recognition of the laureates’ academic achievements but also reflects the accelerating iteration trends of basic disciplines in the intelligent era.
