Google Gemini Launches on Google TV Today

Google has expanded its AI assistant Gemini to Google TV, bringing natural language, conversational capabilities to the big screen. Starting today, Gemini is available on the TCL QM9K series of smart TVs, with broader rollout planned later this year to other devices including the Google TV Streamer 4K, Walmart Onn 4K Pro, and select 2025 models from Hisense and TCL. This move brings Google’s AI-powered assistant to over 300 million active Google TV and Android TV OS-powered devices, marking a significant step in integrating AI into everyday home entertainment. Gemini on Google TV allows users to engage in free-flowing, human-like conversations using voice commands or the remote’s microphone button. While traditional Google Assistant functions—like playing a specific show or adjusting settings—remain fully operational, Gemini enhances the experience by enabling deeper, context-aware interactions. For example, users can ask for show recommendations tailored to multiple preferences: “Find me something to watch with my wife. I like dramas, but she likes lighthearted comedies.” The AI can also help catch up on a series with a simple request like, “What happened in the last season of ‘Outlander’?” Even if you can’t remember a show’s title, you can describe it—“What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?”—and Gemini will suggest options like “The Pitt” and provide reviews to help decide. Beyond entertainment, Gemini brings educational and practical value to the living room. Parents and students can use it for homework help, such as asking, “Explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader,” followed by, “How do I make a model volcano?” The AI delivers clear explanations and suggests related YouTube videos for visual learning. For creative or practical tasks, users can get guidance on learning guitar, planning a vacation, or preparing a quick dessert—“What’s a dessert I can make in less than an hour?”—with step-by-step advice and video support. Google emphasizes that Gemini does not replace the existing Google Assistant but complements it, offering a more intuitive and dynamic experience. The AI’s responses are read aloud, and it provides follow-up suggestions, making it ideal for family use. The integration is part of Google’s broader strategy to make AI accessible across devices, following recent updates that removed the membership fee for Gemini in Chrome and added new browser features. The rollout comes amid growing competition in the smart TV space. At CES 2025, Samsung and LG announced plans to bring Microsoft’s Copilot AI to their new TV models, signaling a race to integrate advanced AI assistants into home entertainment systems. While Gemini’s initial release focuses on content discovery and general knowledge, Google plans to expand functionality over time. The company sees the TV as the heart of the home—a space for connection, learning, and entertainment—and aims to make AI a seamless part of that experience. For now, users can start experiencing Gemini on the TCL QM9K series, with more devices joining later this year. As AI becomes more embedded in everyday technology, Google’s move underscores its vision of making intelligent assistance available everywhere, from smartphones to the living room screen.
