Crypto.com Buys AI.com for $70M in Record Domain Sale Ahead of Super Bowl Launch

Just in time for a high-profile Super Bowl advertisement, Crypto.com founder Kris Marszalek has made the most expensive domain name purchase in history, acquiring AI.com for $70 million, according to the Financial Times. The transaction, completed entirely in cryptocurrency with an undisclosed seller, surpasses all previous records and marks a bold bet on the future of artificial intelligence. Marszalek plans to unveil the new AI.com website during the Super Bowl, positioning it as a platform for a personal AI agent capable of handling messaging, app interactions, and even stock trading. “If you take a long-term view — 10 to 20 years — [AI] is going to be one of the greatest technological waves of our lifetime,” he told the FT, underscoring his belief in the transformative potential of the technology. The purchase sets a new benchmark in domain name pricing. Previously, CarInsurance.com held the record at $49.7 million in 2010, followed by VacationRentals.com at $35 million (2007) and Voice.com at $30 million (2019). Other notable sales include PrivateJet.com ($30 million), 360.com ($17 million), and Sex.com, which has changed hands twice for over $13 million each time—though its most recent owner ultimately went bankrupt trying to profit from the site. Larry Fischer, the broker who facilitated the sale, emphasized the scarcity and irreplaceability of such assets. “With assets like AI.com, there are no substitutes,” Fischer told the FT. “When one becomes available, the opportunity may never present itself again.” While the long-term value of these premium domains remains uncertain, Marszalek’s move reflects a broader trend among tech and crypto entrepreneurs willing to spend heavily on digital real estate with strategic or symbolic significance. Already the owner of Crypto.com and a $700 million stake in naming rights for a major sports stadium, Marszalek appears to be doubling down on his vision of owning foundational digital identities in emerging technological eras. Whether AI.com will deliver on its promise remains to be seen, but the purchase has already cemented its place in the annals of internet history.
