Reddit CEO Says AI Chatbots Aren’t Major Traffic Drivers Despite Partnerships and Search Innovations
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated during the company’s Q3 2025 earnings call that AI chatbots are not currently a significant driver of traffic for the platform. Despite advancements in AI-powered search by companies like OpenAI and Google, Huffman emphasized that Google search and direct visits remain Reddit’s primary sources of traffic. “Chatbots aren’t a traffic driver today,” Huffman said. “Our relationships with the companies we work with are healthy. Over the past few years, we’ve learned a lot about the value of Reddit’s data and how our products can complement each other. I’m looking forward to continuing these collaborations. But for now, they’re not a major traffic driver.” When asked if roughly half of Reddit’s traffic comes from Google and the other half from direct access, Huffman responded that the numbers are “approximate, but pretty close.” Reddit’s relationship with AI companies has been complex. In May 2024, the platform tightened access to its data, requiring commercial users to obtain a license. However, it has maintained partnerships with OpenAI and Google, allowing both to use Reddit’s data for training AI models. At the same time, Reddit is involved in legal disputes with other AI firms, including Anthropic and Perplexity. Despite these tensions, the company reported strong financial and user growth. Revenue reached $585 million in Q3, a 68% increase year-over-year. Reddit recorded 116 million daily active unique users and 444 million weekly active unique users, marking a 20% year-over-year rise in daily users. International daily active users grew by 31% year-over-year, and more than 190 million Americans visit the site weekly. Huffman highlighted the company’s focus on search as a core part of the user experience. Reddit is now handling 20% of its search volume through its AI-powered Answers feature and its main search box. In Q3, 75 million people conducted searches on Reddit each week. The company is working to further integrate AI into its search functionality, with a unified AI and search experience expected in the coming quarters. Additionally, Reddit is testing a simplified onboarding process aimed at boosting early user engagement. “We want users to see in their first session that Reddit is amazing and has content for them,” Huffman said. “Our goal is to connect users with relevant content as quickly as possible.”
