US robotics race depends on Chinese hardware manufacturing
The United States robotics sector is confronting a critical supply chain bottleneck as industry leaders and policymakers acknowledge a heavy reliance on Chinese-manufactured hardware. While Silicon Valley maintains a dominant position in artificial intelligence and robotic software, the physical components required for commercial scaling motors, sensors, batteries, and chassis are predominantly sourced from abroad. This dependency is driven by China’s mature manufacturing ecosystem, which delivers components at costs five to ten times lower than domestic alternatives, alongside an electric vehicle supply chain that naturally overlaps with robotics production. Industry executives emphasize that bridging this manufacturing gap is essential for maintaining global competitiveness. Sergey Levine, cofounder of San Francisco-based Physical Intelligence, noted that although Chinese hardware currently satisfies quality and affordability standards, establishing a resilient domestic supply chain remains a strategic necessity. During a congressional hearing in April, Standard Bots CEO Evan Beard warned that declining US manufacturing capacity threatens the sector’s ability to scale, calling for renewed investment in domestic production. A June McKinsey analysis reinforced these concerns, documenting China’s control over vital robotics components, including approximately 90 percent of permanent-magnet processing capacity. The supply chain challenge has grown more complex following a July Federal Communications Commission directive that restricts the importation of foreign-made humanoid and advanced robots citing national security. While domestic manufacturers have welcomed the restriction, researchers and startups caution that the policy effectively limits access to affordable, high-quality hardware, potentially stifling innovation and increasing development costs. Levine and other experts stress that technological sovereignty requires a holistic approach, arguing that software capabilities alone cannot compensate for foundational hardware dependencies. As Washington navigates the intersection of technological leadership and economic security, US robotics firms face mounting pressure to reconstruct domestic manufacturing capabilities while managing near-term supply constraints. Policymakers and industry stakeholders continue to advocate for targeted funding and public-private partnerships aimed at rebuilding component production networks. The long-term viability of the US robotics race will ultimately depend on successfully decoupling critical hardware sourcing from foreign markets without sacrificing the cost efficiency and quality necessary for global competition.
