Meta emails thousands of laid-off employees
Meta has initiated a workforce reduction affecting approximately 10% of its 78,000 employees, as confirmed by an internal email obtained by Business Insider. The layoffs, which began on Wednesday, are framed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg's leadership team as a strategic move to run the company more efficiently and reallocate resources toward other investments. As part of this broader reorganization, Meta also plans to shift over 7,000 staff members to new initiatives focused on artificial intelligence. While the company declined to provide further comment, the internal communication detailed specific procedures for affected workers regarding severance, benefits, and visa support. The emails inform recipients that their roles have been eliminated effective immediately. Employees enter a paid non-working notice period, during which access to internal systems is revoked and no further work is expected. Despite the loss of system access, workers continue to receive their full salary and benefits through their designated termination date. Accrued paid time off will be paid out in the final paycheck, and vested restricted stock units remain eligible for distribution. To support the transition, Meta offers three months of complimentary job search assistance through an external partner, Lee Hecht Harrison. A significant portion of the guidance addresses the separation agreement process. Employees must sign an electronic version of the agreement sent to their personal email addresses to receive their severance payout. The correspondence notes that if an employee accepts a new position at Meta within one week prior to their termination date, they remain employed and forfeit eligibility for the severance plan. The email urges recipients to check their spam folders if the document does not arrive by the following day and provides instructions for submitting a case via the Alumni Portal if issues arise. For international employees, the letter offers specific guidance on immigration matters. Meta acknowledges the difficulty this presents for workers whose visas are sponsored by the company. The Alumni Portal includes general immigration advice and contact information for the law firm assigned to handle individual cases. Employees can open support cases directly through the portal for specific questions regarding their work authorization status. Access to company resources remains available through the Alumni Portal, which becomes accessible within an hour of system deactivation. Workers are instructed to retrieve personal items from their desks before leaving the office if they are physically present, with further retrieval instructions provided on the portal. The communication concludes with an expression of gratitude for the employees' contributions, stating that their impact has been a vital part of Meta's journey. This restructuring highlights Meta's ongoing effort to balance operational efficiency with aggressive growth in the AI sector.
