Sora to Launch Pet Cameos, Social Features, and Android App with Video Editing Tools Soon

OpenAI is rolling out a series of major updates to its AI video generation app, Sora, which has surged to the top of the App Store in the U.S. and Canada since its late September launch. The app, still ranked No. 1 in both countries, will soon introduce new features including video editing tools, the ability to create AI “cameos” of pets and personal objects, enhanced social functionality, and an upcoming Android version. The news was shared by Bill Peebles, head of Sora, on X, where he announced that new creation tools will be available in the coming days. One of the most anticipated additions is the ability to turn pets, favorite stuffed toys, and other personal items into AI-generated cameos. These cameos function similarly to user-created avatars: users record a short video of the subject, and Sora uses that to generate a digital version that can appear in future AI videos. Peebles emphasized that the feature is designed to be highly customizable and fun, noting that users are likely to create “lots of crazy new cameos.” To help users discover popular creations, the app will soon display trending cameos in real time within the generation interface. Beyond cameos, Sora will introduce basic video editing capabilities, starting with the ability to stitch multiple clips together. Additional editing tools are expected to roll out over time. The social experience is also being upgraded, with plans to introduce dedicated channels for communities such as universities, workplaces, and sports clubs—allowing groups to collaborate and share AI-generated content in a more connected way. OpenAI is also addressing user feedback about overly strict content moderation, which has sometimes blocked legitimate or creative outputs. The company says it’s working to refine its moderation system to reduce false positives while maintaining safety. Performance improvements are also in progress to make the app faster and more reliable. Although Sora is currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, OpenAI has not yet announced a specific launch date for the Android version. Peebles confirmed it is “actually coming soon,” but no further details were given. According to third-party data from Appfigures, Sora has already reached approximately 2 million downloads since its launch—remarkable given that the app remains invite-only and was initially released only in the U.S. and Canada.
