Kiwi Charge Launches Autonomous EV Charging Project with $1.7M in Funding from Ontario and Industry Partners

TORONTO—Robotics and AI startup Kiwi Charge has announced the launch of its autonomous electric vehicle (EV) charging project, backed by a $1.7 million investment from the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), along with support from General Motors Canada and Pfaff Automotive. The funding will accelerate the development of mobile EV charging solutions that integrate artificial intelligence, robotics, and electrification technologies. The initiative aims to address key challenges in EV infrastructure, including limited access to charging stations, especially in rural and underserved areas. Kiwi Charge’s system features a self-driving charging robot capable of autonomously locating EVs, connecting to their charging ports, and delivering power without human intervention. The technology uses AI for navigation, real-time decision-making, and obstacle avoidance, while robotics enable precise and safe plug insertion. The project is designed to enhance the convenience and scalability of EV adoption by enabling on-demand charging through mobile units that can be deployed to homes, workplaces, or public locations. This approach reduces the need for extensive fixed infrastructure and supports the growing demand for flexible, intelligent energy solutions. General Motors Canada and Pfaff Automotive are contributing technical expertise and industry insight to help refine the system’s performance and ensure compatibility with a wide range of EV models. The collaboration underscores a broader industry shift toward smart, automated mobility systems. Kiwi Charge’s autonomous charging solution is expected to undergo pilot testing in select Ontario communities later this year, with plans for wider deployment based on results. The project aligns with Ontario’s broader clean technology goals and supports Canada’s transition to a low-carbon transportation future. With this funding and strategic partnerships, Kiwi Charge is positioning itself as a key player in the next generation of EV infrastructure, combining innovation in AI and robotics to create a more accessible and efficient charging experience.
