Meta to Link Employee Performance Reviews to AI Usage Starting in 2026
Meta plans to incorporate AI-driven impact into employee performance evaluations starting in 2026, making the use of artificial intelligence a core expectation across the company. In an internal memo shared with employees on Thursday, Janelle Gale, Meta’s head of people, announced that the company will begin assessing staff based on how effectively they leverage AI to deliver results and develop tools that significantly boost productivity. The new performance framework will not include direct metrics on individual AI usage or adoption in 2025’s annual reviews. However, employees are encouraged to highlight their AI-powered achievements in their self-evaluations. The goal is to identify and reward those who use AI to drive meaningful change—whether in their own work or by enhancing team performance. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the shift, stating, “It's well-known that this is a priority, and we're focused on using AI to help employees with their day-to-day work.” The company has already taken steps to embed AI into its operations, including allowing job applicants to use AI during coding interviews and launching an internal gamified program called “Level Up” to promote AI adoption. This move reflects a broader trend in corporate America, where major technology firms are pushing for an AI-native culture. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have all issued clear directives to employees: using AI is no longer optional. Microsoft executives have told managers that AI integration is essential, while Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized in a July all-hands meeting that AI adoption is critical for the company to stay ahead in the AI race. Meta employees have already been using the company’s internal AI assistant to help draft performance reviews, a practice that underscores the growing role of AI in everyday workflows. As the company moves toward a future where AI is deeply embedded in its operations, Meta aims to recognize and reward those who are accelerating its progress.
