Canada and INOVAIT Announce 17 AI-Driven Medical Innovation Projects in Latest Pilot Fund Awards

INOVAIT, Canada’s national network advancing image-guided therapy (IGT) and artificial intelligence (AI), has announced the latest recipients of its Pilot Fund at the ALL IN 2025 event in Montréal. The program, supported by the Government of Canada’s Strategic Response Fund, awards non-dilutive funding to innovative medical technology projects that leverage AI, machine learning, and big data analytics to improve patient outcomes. A total of 17 projects have been selected from a competitive pool of proposals, with INOVAIT committing over $2.5 million in funding. Each project can receive up to $150,000 for research and development activities spanning 9 to 15 months. The combined value of all 17 projects exceeds $8 million, reflecting strong collaborative investment from participating organizations across Canada, including institutions from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador. One of the highlighted projects is led by Reveal Surgical in partnership with Reveal Life Science, Polytechnique Montréal, and the McGill University Health Centre. Their initiative, Sentry Neuro and Breast, uses Raman spectroscopy combined with AI to detect tumor margins in real time during brain and breast surgeries. The INOVAIT funding will support finalizing the prototype, conducting a clinical study on 50 patients, and preparing the technology for hospital deployment. Christian Sauvageau, CEO of Reveal Surgical, praised the support, stating that the Pilot Fund is accelerating the clinical readiness of their AI-powered molecular detection system. He emphasized the importance of Canadian collaboration in developing a world-class solution that enhances surgical precision and patient safety. The Government of Canada has expressed strong support for the initiative. Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon highlighted how AI is transforming healthcare, from improved diagnostics to more accurate treatment guidance. He commended INOVAIT for helping Canadian innovators bring life-changing technologies to patients faster. Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly underscored the importance of fostering innovation across sectors, noting that programs like the INOVAIT Pilot Fund are vital to advancing AI applications in health care. Minister of Health Marjorie Michel added that AI is helping reduce medical errors, improve treatment accuracy, and free up healthcare professionals from administrative tasks so they can focus more on patient care. INOVAIT continues to strengthen Canada’s IGT ecosystem by connecting startups, academic institutions, and industry leaders to drive innovation. Since its launch in 2020 by Sunnybrook Research Institute, the network has been supported by the Government of Canada’s Strategic Response Fund to promote cutting-edge health technologies.
