In a TikTok video posted on February 9, a Best Buy employee is heard telling a customer: “I don’t know what’s with the Mac Mini—everyone keeps buying them a lot. Is this some AI thing?” The answer is yes. OpenClaw, formerly known as Clawdbot or Moltbolt, is an autonomous AI agent developed by Peter Steinberger, who recently joined OpenAI after being pursued by top AI executives, including Sam Altman and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg. OpenClaw can manage schedules, monitor coding sessions, and run other AI agents. One of its standout features is the ability to operate locally on a user’s device, which requires significant system memory. This local execution capability has driven demand for Mac Minis with higher RAM configurations—specifically the 24GB and 32GB models. As a result, Apple is struggling to keep up with demand. Customers in New York, for instance, can still pick up the 16GB model by this weekend, but the 24GB and 32GB versions are showing shipping and pickup windows extending into March 18, as of Wednesday afternoon. While custom and high-memory configurations typically take longer to ship, the current spike in interest is clearly tied to the OpenClaw phenomenon. The tech community is increasingly aware that running advanced AI agents locally demands robust hardware, and the Mac Mini—with its M4 chip and expandable memory—has become a go-to choice. The hype has even spilled over to third-party marketplaces. On eBay, dozens of new listings for brand-new and pre-owned Mac Minis are appearing, many priced at or above retail. Resellers are capitalizing on the frenzy, hoping to profit from the surge in demand. However, experts suggest buyers might want to hold off. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a well-known Apple insider, reported that Apple is expected to unveil a new generation of Macs—including a refreshed Mac Mini—in 2026.
