GitHub Copilot Adds Open-Weight Kimi K2.7 Code Model

GitHub has announced the general availability of Kimi K2.7 Code as a selectable option within GitHub Copilot, representing the first integration of an open-weight model into the platform model picker. Hosted on Microsoft Azure and billed through a usage-based structure at provider list rates, the release provides developers with an additional, cost-efficient alternative for AI-assisted coding tasks. The deployment follows a phased rollout strategy. Access initially extends to Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Max subscribers via the Visual Studio Code interface. GitHub will progressively expand availability to Copilot Business and Enterprise plans, as well as additional development surfaces, over the coming weeks. To maintain organizational oversight, the model remains disabled by default for commercial tiers. Plan administrators must explicitly activate Kimi K2.7 Code through Copilot settings before teams can utilize it. GitHub advises enterprise administrators to conduct comprehensive security, compliance, and data-governance assessments prior to enabling the open-weight architecture. Official documentation detailing supported models and selection guidelines is available through GitHub resources. The company continues to monitor performance metrics and invites developer feedback through community channels to refine integration and future updates.
