Thomas Dohmke, the former CEO of GitHub, has joined Apiiro as a strategic advisor, bringing his extensive experience in developer tools and software ecosystems to a startup focused on securing AI-generated code. Dohmke stepped down from GitHub earlier this year after leading the platform through a period of rapid growth and transformation under Microsoft’s ownership. At Apiiro, Dohmke will help shape the company’s strategy around safeguarding software development in an era increasingly driven by artificial intelligence. As AI coding assistants become more prevalent, concerns have mounted over the security risks they introduce—particularly when developers use multiple AI agents without full awareness of their organization’s policies, compliance standards, or security protocols. Apiiro’s platform integrates directly with companies’ existing code management systems, offering real-time insights and automated fixes to ensure AI-generated code adheres to internal security and governance rules. According to Dohmke, the key innovation lies in providing context to AI tools so they understand not just what code to write, but how to write it safely and in alignment with company standards. “The important part is giving AI the right context,” Dohmke said. “Apiiro can detect issues before they become vulnerabilities and fix them automatically, without burdening developers with extra steps.” Apiiro has raised over $100 million from top-tier investors, including General Catalyst, Greylock, and Kleiner Perkins. The company is led by CEO Idan Plotnik, a seasoned entrepreneur and former cybersecurity executive at Microsoft who has previously launched and sold multiple tech startups. Dohmke first met Plotnik about three years ago and was impressed by his vision and energy. While the role comes with equity in the company, Dohmke emphasized that his primary motivation is the mission—helping organizations navigate the growing complexity of AI-driven development. As more teams adopt AI to accelerate prototyping and product development, the need for tools that ensure code quality and security will only grow. Dohmke believes Apiiro is well-positioned to meet that demand, and he sees his advisory role as a chance to help build a safer, more responsible future for software development.
