Trump Administration Eases Restrictions: Anthropic's Mythos 5 Restored Access to Over 100 U.S. Institutions
On June 27 local time, the U.S. Trump administration announced an adjustment to previously imposed restrictions on Anthropic's cybersecurity models, permitting the company to redeploy its flagship cybersecurity model, Mythos 5, to over 100 U.S. government agencies and enterprises. This policy shift comes just about two weeks after the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to withdraw both the Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models, marking a significant relaxation of prior constraints. According to reports by Semafor and Reuters, the entities now authorized to access Mythos 5 include U.S. federal departments, companies operating critical infrastructure and defense-related sectors, as well as non-U.S.-citizen employees within these institutions. Additionally, Anthropic’s own non-U.S.-citizen staff have been included in the permitted access scope, having also been subject to earlier bans. In a letter obtained by Semafor, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that the government has confirmed relevant agencies possess adequate security safeguards, thereby allowing "certain trusted partners" to regain access to the Claude Mythos 5 model. However, this policy adjustment applies solely to Mythos 5 and does not restore eligibility for Fable 5 usage. Fable 5 represents another variant of Mythos 5, which was initially released ahead of schedule due to enhanced safety mechanisms. However, subsequent claims by security researchers indicated that its protective measures could be relatively easily bypassed, leading to the simultaneous withdrawal of both models alongside Mythos 5. Later that day, Anthropic issued a statement via the X platform confirming that since June 12, it had collaborated closely with the U.S. government to reinstate deployment permissions for both Mythos 5 and Fable 5. The company noted that services for Mythos 5 have already begun restoration for agencies responsible for managing and safeguarding U.S. critical infrastructure. It further pledged continued cooperation with the government to expand Mythos 5 accessibility while advocating for broader user availability for Fable 5.
