Google unveils radical redesign of Gmail, Drive, and Calendar icons
Google is rolling out a comprehensive visual overhaul for its Workspace applications, introducing a radical redesign that emphasizes AI integration and distinct branding. Recent reports indicate that major apps including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and others are undergoing significant changes centered around two key themes: the widespread adoption of gradient effects and the removal of the traditional four-color container. The new design language incorporates the multicolored gradient previously seen only in the Google G logo, Gemini, Home, Photos, and Maps. This visual cue signals the integration of AI-powered features across the suite. Furthermore, the redesign addresses long-standing criticism regarding icon uniformity. By discarding the mandate to include all four company colors in every icon, Google aims to enhance color and shape distinction. Most applications have also eliminated the background page container, allowing for larger, more unique icons that stand out individually. Google Drive has shifted from a multi-colored exterior to a design dominated by green, yellow, and blue, matching its associated editor apps. The icon now features a rounded, almost bulbous triangle with a sharp geometric center. Similarly, the core editing applications—Docs, Sheets, and Slides—retain single predominant colors but have adjusted their orientations. While Docs remains a vertical sheet, Sheets and Slides have switched to landscape formats to better reflect their actual usage, with Slides adopting a horizontal switch. Communication tools are receiving substantial updates. Google Meet moves away from its current look to feature a video camera icon where yellow is the primary color. Google Chat introduces a pill-shaped message bubble with a smile, utilizing green as a nod to its predecessor, Hangouts. Gmail retains its envelope motif but with a softer, more rounded shape. Notably, it is the only new icon to incorporate all four Google colors, reinforcing its identity with red as the dominant hue. Productivity tools like Google Calendar are returning to a skeuomorphic style reminiscent of physical flip calendars. The four-color container is gone, replaced by a classic blue exterior. Google Tasks and Keep have also simplified their designs, focusing on the checkmark and light bulb respectively, while removing distracting backgrounds. Google Voice maintains its phone shape but with more rounded edges and a light green color that aligns with the Chat application. Finally, Google Forms and Sites have updated their motifs, with Forms adopting multiple-choice bubbles and Sites shifting to a lighter blue with a horizontal orientation to represent desktop web usage. This comprehensive update marks a clear departure from previous design trends, prioritizing clarity, AI signaling, and brand differentiation.
