Elastic Completes Acquisition of Jina AI to Enhance Search AI Capabilities in Multimodal and Multilingual Retrieval

Elastic has completed the acquisition of Jina AI, a leading open source company specializing in multimodal and multilingual embeddings, rerankers, and small language models. The move strengthens Elastic’s position as a top Search AI Platform by enhancing its capabilities in vector search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and context engineering—key components for building intelligent, search-powered AI applications. Ash Kulkarni, CEO of Elastic, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating, “Search is the foundation of generative AI.” He added that Jina AI’s advanced models and talented team will empower Elastic’s platform to deliver more accurate, context-rich results for developers and enterprises. The integration supports Elastic’s mission to provide open, accessible, and production-ready AI solutions at scale. Jina AI brings a suite of cutting-edge technologies to Elastic, including dense vector embeddings that handle both text and images, multilingual processing for global relevance, and high-performance rerankers that improve retrieval accuracy for long-form and multilingual documents. The company also developed specialized small language models for tasks like converting HTML to Markdown, which help ground AI outputs in reliable, structured data. These additions complement Elastic’s existing ELSER model and expand its ability to manage unstructured data effectively. Han Xiao, former CEO of Jina AI and now VP of AI at Elastic, highlighted the opportunity to scale Jina AI’s mission. “Our goal has always been to build search foundation models that push the limits of retrieval relevance,” he said. “Joining Elastic allows us to bring these innovations into real-world applications worldwide.” Elastic will continue Jina AI’s tradition of open-source transparency by releasing models on Hugging Face and publishing research. Enterprise customers will be able to access these models through the Elastic Inference Service (EIS) on Elastic Cloud, enabling seamless integration with Elastic’s vector database for efficient, native inference. The acquisition also expands Elastic’s team of AI researchers, accelerating innovation in foundational AI models. Elastic remains committed to open collaboration, ensuring developers and organizations can leverage these tools without vendor lock-in. Elastic (NYSE: ESTC), the Search AI Company, helps organizations transform their data into actionable insights through its integrated search, observability, and security platform. Used by thousands of companies—including over half of the Fortune 500—the platform is designed to support AI-driven workflows at scale. Forward-looking statements in this release, including those about product integration and future features, are subject to risks and uncertainties. Actual results may differ due to factors such as integration challenges, market conditions, and changes in technology.
