Autodesk Invests $200M in World Labs to Merge AI World Models with 3D Design Workflows
World Labs, the AI startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, has secured a $200 million investment from Autodesk, the global leader in 3D design software. The collaboration aims to integrate World Labs’ advanced world models—AI systems capable of generating and reasoning about immersive, interactive 3D environments—into Autodesk’s existing design and engineering workflows. The partnership will initially focus on entertainment applications, such as film, television, and gaming, where spatial AI can enhance world-building and character animation. World Labs, which emerged from stealth in 2024 with $230 million in funding and a $1 billion valuation, is now reportedly in talks to raise additional capital at a $5 billion valuation. The company’s flagship product, Marble, launched in November, allows users to create, edit, and download fully interactive 3D environments using natural language prompts. Autodesk’s investment underscores growing confidence in the commercial potential of spatial AI. As a provider of industry-standard tools for architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and entertainment, Autodesk has long emphasized spatial thinking and physical design. The company sees world models as a natural evolution of its mission to empower creators with intelligent tools. Daron Green, Autodesk’s chief scientist, described the partnership as still in its early stages, with the exact integration methods still being explored. He highlighted potential workflows where users might start with a world-model-generated concept—like a conceptual office layout—then use Autodesk’s software to refine specific elements such as furniture design. Conversely, a 3D object created in Autodesk’s platform could be placed into a dynamic, AI-generated environment built via World Labs’ models. Importantly, the two companies have agreed not to share data directly, focusing instead on model-level collaboration. Green noted that the combination of different AI systems—large language models, world models, and Autodesk’s own neural CAD—could unlock new levels of design intelligence. Neural CAD, a generative AI system trained on geometric and functional data, already helps users create 3D models that behave realistically in the physical world. World Labs’ models could extend this capability by enabling entire digital worlds to be generated and interacted with, not just individual components. Green emphasized that the future of AI lies not just in understanding language, but in understanding physical and spatial contexts. “If AI is to be truly useful, it must understand worlds, not just words,” Li said in a statement. “Worlds are governed by geometry, physics, and dynamics, and reconciling the semantic, spatial, and physical is the next great frontier of AI.” The partnership marks a strategic move by Autodesk to deepen its AI integration across its product suite, positioning itself at the forefront of the next wave of spatial intelligence in design and creation.
