AI-Powered Mobile Clinics Bring Affordable Breast Cancer Screening to Rural India
An innovative mobile clinic program in rural India is transforming breast cancer screening through the power of AI. Operated by the nonprofit Health Within Reach Foundation, the Women Cancer Screening Van uses advanced AI technology developed by MedCognetics, a Dallas-based startup part of the NVIDIA Inception program. Equipped with a digital mammography machine and powered by NVIDIA’s edge AI platforms, the van has screened over 3,500 patients—90% of whom had never undergone a mammogram before. The AI solution, built on NVIDIA IGX Orin and Holoscan platforms, enables real-time analysis of mammogram images directly on the vehicle. This allows for immediate triage of suspicious cases, helping identify potential cancers early. In the past year alone, the program detected abnormalities in about 8% of screenings—approximately 300 cases—leading to referrals for further diagnosis and treatment. Among those identified, 24 patients were confirmed to have breast cancer, and all were connected to care before the disease progressed. “This is the way I want to see AI implemented around the world—to help people,” said Ron Nag, CEO and president of MedCognetics. MedCognetics’ AI tools are FDA-cleared as medical devices and include algorithms for cancer triage, detection, breast density assessment, and risk prediction. The company is also developing AI-powered image denoising to correct for motion artifacts caused by patient movement during imaging, significantly improving image clarity. The system can realign images in real time, making it easier for radiologists to spot small, hard-to-detect tumors. Currently, mammogram images are uploaded after the van returns to an urban hub for review by radiologists. However, the foundation aims to deploy faster AI inference directly on the vehicle using edge computing, even in remote areas with limited connectivity. This would allow immediate patient triage on-site, drastically reducing delays in diagnosis. Dr. Mudassar Shaikh, chief medical officer of Health Within Reach, emphasized the importance of accessible screening. “In rural India, where healthcare is often unaffordable or distant, women frequently delay or avoid screenings because breast cancer is painless and symptoms appear late,” he said. “By bringing high-quality care to their doorsteps, we’re helping catch cancer earlier—when it’s most treatable.” With nearly two-thirds of India’s population living in rural areas, mobile AI-powered clinics like this one represent a critical step toward closing the healthcare gap. By combining edge AI, cloud-based analysis, and portable medical technology, the program is setting a new standard for preventive care in underserved regions.
