SpaceX, Cursor and Mistral eye partnership to challenge AI rivals
Elon Musk is accelerating efforts to position his AI company, xAI, against industry leaders Anthropic and OpenAI through strategic partnerships. According to sources familiar with the matter, xAI, which is owned by SpaceX, has recently held discussions with French AI startup Mistral and AI coding platform Cursor regarding a potential three-way alliance. This move aims to bolster xAI's capabilities in AI agents and coding services, areas where competitors have recently gained significant ground. The collaboration potential comes amid a major business development involving Cursor. Earlier this week, SpaceX announced an agreement granting it an option to acquire the French company for $60 billion. Reports indicate that Cursor is currently training its AI models on xAI infrastructure, highlighting deepening technical ties. Additionally, Mistral co-founder Devendra Chaplot joined xAI last month to lead its pretraining efforts, further integrating Mistral's expertise into Musk's organization. Internal pressure on xAI to catch up has intensified. Sources state that since late last year, Musk has frequently expressed concerns to engineers about Anthropic's lead in the race. Michael Nicolls, SpaceX executive and xAI president, recently confirmed publicly that the company is "clearly behind" its competitors and must act quickly. Despite these challenges, xAI is rapidly scaling its physical infrastructure. The company launched its Grok chatbot in 2023 and currently operates one of the largest data center footprints in the industry. Last year, xAI reported possessing 200,000 Nvidia graphics processing units, with plans to expand this capacity to one million. The competitive tension has escalated into public criticism. Musk has openly attacked Anthropic, characterizing its AI models as "misanthropic and evil." Relations between the companies are strained; in January, Anthropic blocked xAI from accessing its Claude models through the Cursor coding tool. Musk also maintains a legal and philosophical dispute with OpenAI, the organization he helped found in 2015. He is currently suing the company for allegedly deviating from its original non-profit mission and has positioned xAI as an alternative to what he terms "woke" AI. Representatives for xAI, Cursor, and Mistral did not immediately respond to requests for comment. As these negotiations proceed, the potential partnership represents a significant attempt by Musk to consolidate resources and technology to close the gap with established US and French AI labs. The outcome of these talks could reshape the competitive landscape in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
