Amazon Announces Potential Sale of Trainium AI Chips Within Two Years as It Targets Nvidia

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed on Wednesday's earnings call that the company expects to begin selling full racks of its Trainium AI chips to external customers within the next two years, signaling this tech giant's transition from a cloud service provider toward becoming a chip manufacturer. "The odds are very good," said Jassy—marking Amazon's first specific timeline, whereas last year's shareholder letter had vaguely mentioned potential future expansion. Currently, Trainium compute power is offered exclusively as a cloud service via AWS to clients including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Uber, having accumulated $225 billion in revenue commitments. This move will place Amazon directly into competition with Nvidia, yet Amazon remains heavily reliant on Nvidia for GPU supply, creating a delicate situation. Jassy stated that Amazon has now become one of the world's top three data center chip companies; chip business revenue is projected to exceed $20 billion this year, potentially reaching $50 billion if operated independently for direct sales. Following the announcement, Amazon's after-hours stock price rose nearly 3%, positioning it near an all-time high.
