China's humanoid robots stun with kung fu routines at Lunar New Year Gala, showcasing rapid advancements in robotics and AI amid global competition.

China showcased its rapid advancements in humanoid robotics during this year’s Lunar New Year Spring Festival Gala, a cultural event with a viewership comparable to the US Super Bowl. In a striking performance, robots from Unitree Robotics executed complex martial arts moves, including backflips, sword swings, and a synchronized routine inspired by "drunken boxing," a traditional Chinese martial art. The robots moved in close proximity to young performers, demonstrating remarkable balance, coordination, and control. The choreography marked a significant leap from last year’s gala, when Unitree’s robots performed a simpler Chinese folk dance. This year’s display, featuring synchronized movements and dynamic acrobatics, quickly went viral on Chinese social media, drawing widespread amazement. On RedNote, a popular video platform, user Ma Xiao noted the dramatic improvement: “Last year, they were only doing very simple things. Now, they’re doing kung fu, flips, synchronized dancing — everybody’s shocked.” Another user, DKKD, shared a video of friends reacting to the performance, with one American saying, “It’s way more impressive than last year. It’s crazy.” The clip was captioned: “Three Americans were scared by the Spring Festival robot,” highlighting global fascination with China’s progress. Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing revealed in a post-gala interview that the company expects to ship up to 20,000 humanoid robots this year — a sharp increase from about 5,500 units delivered in 2025. He also predicted that global shipments of humanoid robots could reach “tens of thousands” this year, with Unitree contributing between 10,000 and 20,000 units. China’s robotics sector is experiencing a surge of innovation and investment. In September, Ant Group, a subsidiary of Alibaba, unveiled R1, a humanoid robot drawing comparisons to Tesla’s Optimus. Two months later, XPeng introduced an upgraded version of its Iron robot, described as “highly human-like.” Meanwhile, China’s top universities are ramping up talent development, with the Ministry of Education announcing plans to launch a new undergraduate program in “embodied intelligence” — a field merging artificial intelligence with physical robotics. Despite the progress, challenges remain. XPeng’s Iron robot fell face-first during its first public debut earlier this year. CEO He Xiaopeng acknowledged the setback on social media, calling it part of “learning to walk.” In April 2024, a Unitree robot accidentally kicked an engineer in the groin during testing, and earlier that year, humanoid robots stumbled and fell during a half-marathon race in Beijing. These incidents underscore the technical hurdles still ahead, even as China accelerates its push to lead in the global robotics race.
