Young Indians Drive ChatGPT Adoption: 50% of Users Aged 18–24, Strong Coding Demand, OpenAI Expands in India

OpenAI has revealed that users aged 18 to 24 account for nearly half of all messages sent to ChatGPT in India, with those under 30 making up 80% of usage. The company highlighted that Indian users are among the most active and engaged globally, leveraging the platform predominantly for professional purposes—35% of messages relate to work, surpassing the global average of 30%. A key driver of this engagement is the strong adoption of Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding assistant. Indians use Codex three times more frequently than the global average, and weekly usage has surged fourfold since the tool launched a Mac app just two weeks ago. Indian users are also asking coding-related questions at three times the global median rate, underscoring a deep interest in software development and technical problem-solving. Beyond work, 35% of messages from Indian users seek guidance, 20% are for general information, and another 20% involve requests for writing assistance or content creation. This aligns with findings from Anthropic, which recently reported that 45.2% of Claude’s tasks in India are related to software development. India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market, with over 100 million weekly users. To further strengthen its presence, the company has introduced a sub-$5 subscription tier tailored for Indian users and launched targeted marketing campaigns to drive adoption. “AI adoption is moving faster than our ability to measure it – and that’s a challenge for anyone trying to make smart decisions,” said OpenAI’s chief economist, Ronnie Chatterji. “Signals is our way of putting real-world evidence on the table, so India’s AI debate can be grounded in facts, not hype.” OpenAI’s momentum in India has accelerated in recent days as the country hosts the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. The company is opening new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru this year and has signed a major agreement with the Tata Group to secure 100 megawatts of AI compute capacity. This partnership will also enable the distribution of ChatGPT Enterprise through Tata’s IT services arm, TCS. Additionally, OpenAI has formed strategic alliances with fintech firm Pine Labs, travel platforms Ixigo and Makemytrip, and food and grocery delivery company Eternal. The company is also collaborating with educational institutions to provide access to its tools for over 100,000 students across India within the next six years.
