OpenAI delays ChatGPT adult mode again
OpenAI has once again postponed the release of ChatGPT's adult mode, a feature designed to provide verified adult users with access to erotica and other mature content. The initiative was first announced by CEO Sam Altman in October, who stated that age-gating mechanisms would be fully implemented in December to adhere to the principle of treating adult users like adults by offering expanded content capabilities. The launch timeline has already been extended once from the original December date. At that time, Altman issued an internal memo declaring a code red, directing teams to prioritize the core ChatGPT experience over peripheral features. Following this, the company shifted the target window to the first quarter of this year. However, an OpenAI spokesperson recently confirmed to Axios that the launch is being pushed out further to focus on higher priority work that impacts more users. According to the spokesperson, the company is currently dedicating resources to enhancing intelligence, refining personality traits, and making the chatbot more proactive. A company representative explained that while OpenAI remains committed to the philosophy of treating adults like adults, ensuring the feature is delivered with the right experience requires additional time. It remains unclear exactly how long this new delay will last. The news of the latest postponement was first reported by Sources, marking the second delay for a feature that has generated significant interest and debate regarding content safety and policy enforcement within the AI industry. This strategic pivot underscores the company's decision to delay controversial content rollout in favor of fundamental improvements to the model's capabilities and user interaction.
