Company partners with Republic of Korea
Google has announced a strategic partnership with the Republic of Korea to advance scientific research through artificial intelligence. This collaboration aligns with the Ministry of Science and ICT's newly launched K-Moonshot Missions, an initiative designed to drive significant improvements in research productivity and tackle national grand challenges. As part of this agreement, Google will establish an AI Campus within its Seoul offices. This facility will serve as a dedicated hub for Korean academia and research institutions to collaborate directly with Google's leading AI experts, accelerating breakthroughs through access to advanced AI for Science models, programs, and events. Initial collaborations will focus on research-oriented institutions, including Seoul National University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, as well as the Ministry's three AI Bio Innovation Hubs. The partnership aims to leverage Google's models in critical sectors such as life sciences, energy, weather, and climate. By combining frontier AI capabilities with local scientific expertise, the initiative seeks to unlock discoveries with long-term societal benefits. In addition to research infrastructure, the partnership emphasizes talent development and safety. To support the next generation of Korean AI professionals, Google plans to facilitate connections with Google DeepMind and explore internship opportunities for students. This effort builds on Google's broader regional commitment, which recently included the distribution of 50,000 AI Essentials scholarships to help job seekers acquire foundational skills. On the safety front, Google will collaborate with the Korean AI Safety Institute on research and best practices, following the Frontier AI Safety Commitments made during the AI Seoul Summit. The partnership also looks to build upon the legacy of AlphaGo, a milestone achievement that demonstrated the power of AI in complex problem-solving. Google expressed excitement about supporting the government's investments in local infrastructure, such as the upcoming National AI for Science Center scheduled to open in May. By integrating Google DeepMind's cutting-edge models with Korea's brilliant scientific community, the alliance aims to drive a new era of innovation that addresses global challenges while fostering sustainable growth in the Korean technology sector.
