OpenAI Adjusts Product Strategy: Co-founder Greg Brockman Takes Over Product Direction

According to Wired, OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman has formally taken over the company's product strategy. This adjustment also signals that OpenAI is accelerating efforts to unify its core product portfolio in preparation for the era of AI Agents. In fact, Brockman had already been temporarily overseeing these matters. With OpenAI AGI Deployment CEO Fidji Simo currently on medical leave, he has managed the company’s product operations as acting head. The report states that in an internal memo, Brockman outlined plans to integrate ChatGPT with the coding product Codex into a unified experience. He stated that the company is "consolidating product capabilities to maximize focus on an agent-centric future while winning both consumer and enterprise markets." Subsequently, OpenAI confirmed to media outlets that although Fidji Simo remains on leave, she participated in this organizational restructuring. The company further emphasized that discussions regarding integrating ChatGPT, Codex, and API services onto a single platform under one central product team have long been underway. This change continues OpenAI’s strategic direction toward “returning to core business” observed over the past year. At the end of last year, CEO Sam Altman issued an internal “code red,” directing the company to refocus on enhancing the main ChatGPT user experience. Since then, OpenAI has gradually scaled back certain initiatives deemed “side projects,” including video generation models like Sora and scientific research programs such as OpenAI for Science, redirecting more resources toward AI agents, chat-based products, and developer ecosystem development. As competition within the AI industry shifts from pure model capability to product ecosystems and agent platforms, OpenAI’s latest product integration is widely viewed by external observers as a significant signal of its next phase of commercialization and platform-oriented positioning.
