AI-Assisted Coding Surges in Adoption, but Human Oversight Remains Essential for Quality and Innovation

SAN FRANCISCO—AI-assisted coding is rapidly transforming software development, but technology leaders remain firmly committed to maintaining human oversight, according to new insights from Canva. The findings, drawn from a global survey of 300 technology decision-makers across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, reveal that while AI tools are being widely adopted, their success hinges on integration with human expertise, critical thinking, and quality control. “AI in engineering is a real disruptive change that can’t be ignored,” said Brendan Humphreys, Chief Technology Officer at Canva. “When paired with human judgment and expertise, it unlocks significant benefits—from rapid prototyping and faster development cycles to increased productivity. The engineers who will thrive in this new era are those who use AI to enhance their thinking and output, not replace it. They bring creativity, critical analysis, and a deep sense of ownership. That’s how organizations can move fast, innovate responsibly, and deliver high-quality software.” The survey highlights a growing consensus among tech leaders that AI should serve as a powerful collaborator, not a substitute for human ingenuity. Respondents emphasized that AI-generated code must undergo rigorous review before deployment, reinforcing the importance of human accountability in the development process. Canva’s research underscores its broader philosophy: AI should amplify human potential, not diminish it. The most impactful outcomes arise when AI tools are combined with human creativity, domain knowledge, and ethical judgment—especially in high-stakes environments where code quality and reliability are paramount. The findings also shed light on how AI is influencing technical hiring practices. Canva has incorporated AI-assisted coding into its interview process, using it to evaluate problem-solving skills and coding efficiency while still prioritizing human evaluation to assess depth of understanding and design thinking. The survey was conducted in August 2025 by Canva in partnership with Method Communications and distributed through Watermelon Research. It included 50 respondents each from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, India, and Australia, ensuring a diverse and representative sample across key global markets. Canva, launched in 2013, is the world’s leading all-in-one visual communication platform, empowering users across more than 190 countries.
