India’s AI User Surge Meets Monetization Challenge as Firms Shift from Free Promos to Paid Subscriptions
India’s rapid rise as a global hub for generative AI is entering a pivotal phase, as tech giants shift from aggressive user acquisition to testing monetization strategies. Despite becoming the world’s largest market for generative AI app downloads in 2025—surpassing the U.S. with a 207% year-over-year increase—India still contributes only about 1% of global in-app AI revenue, even though it accounts for roughly 20% of downloads. This stark contrast highlights the challenge of converting massive user growth into sustainable revenue. Companies like OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity had previously offered extended free trials and bundled premium access with Indian telecom providers such as Airtel to lower entry barriers in a price-sensitive market. However, many of these promotions are now ending. OpenAI’s free ChatGPT Go access in India has expired, and Perplexity discontinued its Airtel Pro bundle in January. These changes mark a turning point, offering a real-world test of whether newly acquired users will upgrade to paid subscriptions. The data shows the short-term impact of these free offers. In November and December 2025, AI app in-app purchase revenue in India fell 22% and 18% month over month, respectively. ChatGPT’s revenue dropped even more sharply—down 33% and 32%—following the launch of its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan. Despite this, ChatGPT still commands over 60% of GenAI in-app revenue in India, making its pricing decisions a key driver of overall market performance. The surge in adoption was fueled by a wave of new product launches, including DeepSeek, Grok, and Meta AI, along with major upgrades to existing platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Viral interest in AI-generated content also played a major role, with content creation and editing tools making up seven of the 20 most downloaded GenAI apps in India in 2025. India’s user base is growing rapidly. It accounted for nearly 19% of the global user base of leading AI assistant apps in 2025—surpassing the U.S., which stood at 10%. ChatGPT led in monthly active users, with over 180 million in January 2026, followed by Google’s Gemini (118 million), Perplexity (19 million), and Meta AI (12 million). OpenAI’s CEO recently confirmed that ChatGPT now has more than 100 million weekly active users in India. Despite this scale, user engagement remains lower than in more mature markets. On average, U.S. users spent 21% more time per week on AI apps and logged 17% more sessions than Indian users in 2025. Analysts say sustained engagement will be critical to unlocking long-term revenue. “AI in-app revenues will likely see meaningful but gradual improvement as users become more deeply integrated into these platforms,” said Sneha Pandey, insights analyst at Sensor Tower. She noted that pricing pressure will remain high due to India’s young, value-conscious population, making affordable tiers, telecom partnerships, and micro-transaction models essential for retention. With over a billion internet users and around 700 million smartphone owners, India represents one of the most significant growth opportunities in the global AI landscape. As companies move beyond free trials, the real test lies in whether they can turn massive user numbers into loyal, paying customers.
