According to sources familiar with the matter, xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, plans to partner with programming startup Cursor to leverage its vast computing power resources in support of the latter's next-generation model training. Under the arrangement, Cursor will train its latest AI coding model, Composer 2.5, on xAI infrastructure using tens of thousands of GPU chips—the core compute resource driving current AI model development. This collaboration signals that xAI is expanding into the "cloud service provider" role. By leasing part of its GPU capacity externally, xAIM aims to commercialize its compute assets while continuing to advance self-developed models, thereby offsetting the substantial costs associated with data center construction and operations. Additionally, the partnership with Cursor will enable xAI to acquire more high-value programming data resources, further enhancing its model capabilities. Today, compute power has become a critical factor in AI competition. Tech giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have generated massive revenues through cloud services by leveraging chip fleets numbering in the millions, while emerging players like CoreWeave and Lambda have built their business around GPU rental offerings. In recent years, xAI has continuously expanded its Colossus data center project, which currently houses approximately 200,000 Nvidia GPUs, with plans to scale up to one million units. Earlier this year, Musk stated that computational advantages would position xAI favorably against competitors OpenAI and Anthropic. However, internal challenges persist at xAI. Senior executives recently noted that the company's Model FLOPs Utilization (MFU) during training stands at merely about 11%, significantly below the industry benchmark range of 35% to 45%. The goal over the coming months is to raise MFU to 50%. Concurrently, personnel adjustments within the infrastructure team have also been reported. To date, neither xAI nor Cursor has commented on these reports regarding the potential cooperation.
