Hyosung Warns ATM Owners to Implement Urgent Security Updates Amid Ongoing Cyberattacks

Hyosung Urges All ATM Operators to Implement Critical Security Measures Amid Large-Scale Cyberattacks DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Hyosung Americas, a leading provider of ATMs, is urging all ATM owners to immediately implement critical security updates to protect their machines from evolving cyber threats. These threats, first identified in September 2024, have targeted Remote Management Software (RMS) systems, allowing unauthorized users to redirect ATM communications and gain unauthorized control. Despite the release of a security patch by Hyosung, many ATMs remain vulnerable because owners and service providers have not yet updated their software or adhered to industry best practices for ATM security. “We take the security and integrity of the ATM cash ecosystem very seriously,” said Nancy Gail Daniels, COO of Hyosung Americas. “Since last year, we have been in constant communication with our partners, emphasizing the importance of implementing the steps outlined in our security advisories. Unfortunately, a significant number of ATMs remain unprotected, and this poses a serious risk. We strongly urge all ATM operators to take immediate action to safeguard their assets.” Recent reports to both the National ATM Council and ATMIA indicate a large-scale cyberattack with concentrated activity in the Northeast and West Coast regions. To mitigate these threats, Hyosung recommends the following critical security practices: Update the software to the latest version, which includes essential security features. Change default passwords to strong, unique combinations and avoid storing them on or within the ATM or its management system. Secure the ATM management software using robust IT and network security, such as operating behind a tightly configured firewall. Enable Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption and/or Message Authentication Codes for added protection. Nancy highlighted that these cyberattacks are a persistent threat across all ATM brands and manufacturers. “Regular security updates and adherence to best practices are not optional in today’s environment; they are essential measures to combat increasingly sophisticated criminal activities,” she stated. ATM owners and partners are encouraged to consult resources from their ATM processor or managed services provider to ensure they are taking adequate steps to secure their machines.
