Seven Stanford faculty members have been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, an honor bestowed upon approximately 250 leading scholars and researchers each year. The Academy recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their fields and who are dedicated to applying their knowledge to address societal issues. “In recognizing excellence across a broad spectrum of disciplines and professions, the Academy highlights the expertise and leadership of its newly elected members. Their diverse talents and experiences will be invaluable as we tackle our society's greatest challenges with interdisciplinary inquiry and the unfettered pursuit of knowledge,” said Goodwin Liu, Board Chair of the Academy and Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, in the announcement. The Stanford faculty members newly elected to the Academy include: Anne Brunet, the Michele and Timothy Barakett Endowed Professor and a professor of genetics at Stanford Medicine, is also a member of Stanford Bio-X, the Cardiovascular Institute, the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, the Stanford Cancer Institute, and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. Her research focuses on aging, longevity, and disease. Lance Dixon, a professor of particle physics and astrophysics at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford, is known for his groundbreaking work in theoretical physics, particularly in understanding the fundamental particles and forces of the universe. Ian Gotlib, the Marjorie Mhoon Fair Professor and a professor of psychology in the School of Humanities and Sciences, is a member of Bio-X, the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute, and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. His research explores the psychological and biological factors that contribute to depression and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. Christopher Manning, the Thomas M. Siebel Professor in Machine Learning and a professor of linguistics in the School of Humanities and Sciences, holds a joint appointment as a professor of computer science in the School of Engineering. He is a senior fellow at the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and a member of Bio-X. Manning’s work is pivotal in natural language processing and computational linguistics, advancing how computers understand and process human language. Walter W. Powell, the Jacks Family Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Faculty Co-Director of the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, brings extensive experience in the study of organizations and philanthropy. His work is crucial for understanding and mitigating natural hazards. Kang Shen, the Frank Lee and Carol Hall Professor and a professor of biology in the School of Humanities and Sciences, is the Vincent V.C. Woo Director of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. He also holds a professorship in pathology at Stanford Medicine and is a member of Bio-X. Shen’s research delves into the mechanisms of neural circuit formation and function, with implications for neurological diseases and disorders. These distinguished scholars join a prestigious group of professionals from various fields, contributing to the Academy's mission of fostering innovative scholarship and addressing critical global challenges.
