Tidal Stops Paying Royalties for AI-Generated Music
Tidal has unveiled a comprehensive policy framework addressing the growing presence of artificial intelligence-generated music, establishing clear boundaries for monetization, labeling, and platform integrity. Effective immediately, the streaming service will cease royalty distribution for tracks identified as entirely AI-generated, redirecting compensation exclusively to human-created works. Starting July 15, all fully AI-produced tracks will carry a standardized visual indicator to inform listeners, with the company noting that this labeling system will eventually expand to encompass content that is substantially AI-generated as detection methodologies mature. In addition to platform-side enforcement, Tidal is shifting part of the labeling responsibility to content distributors, requiring accurate disclosure of AI involvement during the upload process. The company emphasized that this approach is designed to safeguard legitimate artists and preserve listener trust, while preparing for a future where generative tools are more widely adopted but clearly distinguished from human performance. Concurrently, effective mid-July, Tidal will deploy strict enforcement mechanisms against AI-generated music tied to deceptive practices. This includes blocking or removing tracks associated with fraudulent activity, such as impersonation campaigns, coordinated inauthentic streaming, or mass uploads intended to manipulate platform metrics or divert attention from authenticated creators. The policy positions Tidal in alignment with broader industry adjustments to the AI music influx. Earlier this year, Spotify introduced a verification framework that reserves official accreditation for confirmed human artists while restricting AI-centric profiles from obtaining platform badges. Similarly, Deezer has integrated detection algorithms to reduce the discoverability of fully AI-generated uploads and recently launched a public playlist scanner to help users identify synthetic tracks across competing services. Tidal announcement reflects a coordinated sector-wide effort to establish consistent standards, ensuring that technological innovation does not undermine established compensation models or degrade the curated listening experience. By combining immediate financial safeguards, transparent user-facing labeling, and proactive fraud mitigation, the platform aims to balance open access to emerging technologies with the protection of traditional creative economies.
