SpaceX Plans AI Data Centers

SpaceX has unveiled detailed specifications for its proposed orbital AI data centers, marking a strategic expansion as the aerospace firm prepares for a historic public offering. During its IPO week, CEO Elon Musk released the first comprehensive visuals of the satellite architecture, describing it as an initial draft design. The proposed platform measures 20 meters in height with a 70-meter wingspan, establishing it as the largest satellite currently planned for launch by the company. The orbital units will operate as fully autonomous computing hubs, relying on a rack of AI processors cooled by liquid radiators and powered by expansive solar arrays. Musk emphasized that the engineering framework deliberately parallels existing Starlink infrastructure to accelerate development. The company projects that constructing these orbital compute clusters will not present significant technical hurdles compared to its current satellite manufacturing operations. Manufacturing infrastructure for the project is already underway in Bastrop, Texas. SpaceX is constructing a dedicated facility known as the Gigasat plant, which spans over 11 million square feet and will produce the necessary solar paneling. Executive leadership anticipates the factory will reach meaningful production volumes by the close of next year. This expansion directly supports Musk’s long-standing vision of migrating intensive AI workloads to space, where abundant solar energy and operational independence from terrestrial regulatory and community opposition can streamline deployment. The orbital computing initiative forms a cornerstone of SpaceX’s investor narrative as it seeks to price its market valuation at $1.75 trillion. Company filings identify a total addressable market valued at $28.5 trillion, with artificial intelligence representing $26.5 trillion of that total. CFO Bret Johnson confirmed that initial satellite deployments will utilize Nvidia graphics processing units, while long-term operations will transition to custom radiation-hardened semiconductors. These specialized chips will be manufactured at the Terafab facility, a joint semiconductor venture between SpaceX, Tesla, and Intel, which is slated to cover approximately 10 million square feet. SpaceX’s strategic roadmap outlines plans to deploy up to one million orbital data centers, fundamentally transforming the spatial economics of high-performance computing. By integrating AI infrastructure into its existing launch and manufacturing ecosystems, the company aims to establish a scalable, space-based compute network ahead of its public market debut.
