Trump Claims Microsoft Will Prevent Higher Utility Bills Amid Data Center Expansion
Former President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that Microsoft will take steps to ensure American consumers are not burdened with higher utility bills due to the power demands of data centers. Speaking on Truth Social, Trump stated that while data centers are essential to the AI revolution, tech companies must “pay their own way” to prevent increased electricity costs for households. “First up is Microsoft, who my team has been working with, and which will make major changes beginning this week to ensure that Americans don't 'pick up the tab' for their POWER consumption, in the form of paying higher Utility bills,” Trump wrote. He also hinted at further announcements from his team “in the coming weeks.” The claim comes amid growing scrutiny over the energy footprint of large-scale data centers, which are central to training and running artificial intelligence systems. A report by Business Insider found that data center expansion has contributed to rising utility costs in at least 13 U.S. states. Over the past year, Microsoft has been advancing plans for new data center facilities in Wisconsin, Atlanta, Texas, and Michigan. These projects are part of a broader push to support the company’s AI infrastructure, including its investments in OpenAI and cloud computing services. As of now, neither the White House nor Microsoft has issued a public statement in response to Trump’s remarks. The situation remains under development, with more details expected in the coming days.
