Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's InterPositive to Bring AI-Driven Film Tools to Streamer's Production Pipeline

Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence startup founded by actor Ben Affleck in 2022. The agreement transfers all 16 engineers and researchers from the company to Netflix's workforce. Affleck will transition into a senior advisor role, helping to guide the integration of the technology within the streamer's production ecosystem. Affleck launched InterPositive after observing the early emergence of AI in filmmaking and identifying a significant gap in available tools. Motivated by a desire to protect human creativity and support industry professionals, he built a system designed to align with the workflows of cinematographers and directors. In explaining the company's mission, Affleck noted that existing AI tools often lacked the specific vocabulary and controls necessary for on-set consistency. He viewed Netflix as the ideal partner due to its established reputation for scaling technology responsibly. Unlike generative AI models that create visual outputs from text prompts, InterPositive's technology is engineered to ingest "dailies"—the raw, unedited footage shot during production. The system then processes this footage to create assets ready for post-production. According to a joint discussion with Netflix Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone and Head of Content Bela Bajaria, the platform empowers filmmakers to efficiently handle complex tasks such as color correction, visual effects development, and shot reframing. The technology enables specific, high-level manipulations, including the removal of visible stunt wires and the adjustment of backgrounds. Affleck emphasized that these tools are designed to streamline logistical challenges, allowing actors to concentrate fully on their performances rather than technical hurdles. A key differentiator for InterPositive is its training methodology; the models are tailored to individual projects using their own raw footage. This ensures that the resulting assets are unique and aligned with a specific director's vision, rather than relying on generic outputs. Because the system requires raw daily footage to function, it remains dependent on human oversight and collaboration. While Netflix has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for deploying these tools on its internal productions, the industry expects the streamer to integrate the technology into its content pipeline. The primary objective is to enhance efficiency and creative flexibility without disrupting the viewer experience. Ultimately, Netflix aims to leverage InterPositive's capabilities to produce high-quality films and series where the use of AI remains transparent to the audience.
